Narayan Sai is not cooperating with the police during interrogation and is evading answers on important questions. Sai continues to maintain that he neither contacted police sub inspector (PSI) Kumbhani nor asked his aide Uday Sanghani to meet the cop to weaken the cases against him.
According to sources, police on Tuesday cross-examined Sai along with Uday Sanghani, Kumbhani and others arrested in the Rs13 crore bribery case. The cross-verification was conducted to ascertain if Sai had conspired to bribe the investigating officials and whether he had asked Sanghani to contact Kumbhani. Police are trying to join the missing links in the bribery case, but Sai’s interrogation is not helping them, sources added.
Sai, son of self-styled godman Asaram Bapu, is not answering important questions related to the bribery case and is maintaining a silence, sources said, adding that Sai keeps on repeating that he doesn’t know investigating officer Kumbhani and has no idea about Rs5 crore, the remaining bribery amount. Out of the Rs13 crore deal to weaken the cases against rape accused Sai, police have so far recovered only Rs8 crore and have no clue about the remaining amount.
To obtain some clues in the case, cops are concentrating on key aides of Asaram and Narayan Sai, who are still out of police’s net. Cops are also concentrating on those aides of the father-son duo, who are financially strong and have contacts in the political circles so that their role in the bribery case, if any, can be ascertained.
‘Bring some ponk’
Though Surat police is taking every care to keep Narayan Sai away from his aides, still one of them came close to him. When the aide sought his blessings, Sai asked him to bring some ponk – a Surti delicacy. ‘Ponk to khilao, season aa gayi hai’, Sai told the aide. Bring some ponk as its season has come. However, due to heavy security, the aide couldn’t give ponk to Sai.
Sai’s driver questioned
Narayan Sai’s driver Vishnu arrived in Surat on Tuesday to record his statement with the police.
Vishnu, who was with Sai when he was arrested by the Delhi police, was summoned under section 160 of CrPC. The police questioned Vishnu about Sai’s hideouts while on the run evading arrest.
