A police inspector shot himself dead with his private weapon here on Wednesday. Sunil Malhi, an inspector with the Nadidad police station, was on sick leave for the past ten days.

The Chandkheda police which registered a complaint of suicide said Malhi had handed over his revolver at the time of going on leave. "He shot himself with a licenced gun that he owned," said a police officer. Malhi is survived by his wife, three kids (two boys and a girl) and a father who was paralysed. "It seems he was under stress or was depressed owing to some family matter. We are investigating the case," they said. According to police, around 2.15 pm, Malhi locked himself in his house in Chandkheda and shot himself. His family rushed him to a private hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Police said Malhi's brother had committed suicide in 2009.
