Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on Tuesday announced that Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) worth Rs 1.11 lakh crore signed during the Vibrant Gujarat Summit (VGS) would soon be implemented. Addressing the media, at his residence in Gandhinagar, he said that inauguration of work at more than 400 units would begin by March 31.

Rupani said, "The MOUs signed will soon start being implemented. We are going to start production or lay foundation stones for these projects and the activities will be undertaken at more than 400 units."

The chief minister, however, did not reveal any information related to banners and sectors of industries or about proposed job creation.

"We are not focusing on these issues now. The important part is we are serious about implementing the projects. Our opponents always cry foul saying MOUs signed during the VGS do not show results. This is our initiative to counter them. This is a kind of white paper on project implementation issued by my government."

Rupani further said that all the MOUs to be led towards implementation were not signed in the latest chapter of the Vibrant Gujarat Summit. Some were signed in the prior editions but, had not been implemented.

Sources from the industries commissioner (IC) office, on the condition of anonymity, said, "In fact, many of the MOUs which have been counted in this Rs 1.11 lakh crore figure are old ones and their proposition is around Rs 55,000 crore with 50 per cent of the projects selected for inauguration. The fresh MOUs signed in the latest VGS do not carry the condition of immediate implementation except for a handful of projects."

"The China-based Tsingshan Holding Group's MOU for investing Rs 21,000 crore in Dholera SIR with their Indian JV partner Chromeni Steel will be there for sure. But, other major inaugurations will include already announced projects of expansion by Maruti Suzuki, Reliance, Adani, Tata, Honda, and so on," sources from the IC further said.

The staff at IC office had to work hard to prepare the list of projects ready for inauguration. When they were not able to figure out the fresh MOUs of VGS 2019, they were forced to include old MOUs in the list.
