The Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the state's civil aviation department Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for construction of a Greenfield airport at Rajkot.

To be spread over more than 2,500-acre land at a cost of Rs2,500 crore, the airport will come up at Hirasar near Rajkot. The state government said in an official communique that the airport will have a 3,040-metre-long and 45-metre-wide runway.

"The airport will allow services of C type aircraft such as Airbus (A320-200) and Boeing (B737-900) in Rajkot and Saurashtra," it said.

The proposed airport will comprise two parallel taxiways, apron, rapid exit taxi track, terminal building, cargo, MRO / hangers, among others. Out of the total 2,500-acre land, 1,500 acres will be used for airport development, 250 acre for green zone, 524 acres for passenger side amenities, and remaining 250 acres for aviation park. The state government said AAI will invest Rs2,500 in phases for the airport, while it would provide land for the project.

Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who was present at the MoU signing, said in an interaction with media earlier that MoU for Dholera airport would also be signed soon.

"Dholera airport will be like a second airport for Ahmedabad. The Airports Authority of India will hold 51% stake in the project, and the state government 49%. Work on Dholera airport will begin soon," he said.

The investment for Dholera airport is estimated at Rs2,000 crore.

The state government has earmarked 1,423-hectare land for the airport, which would be less than 100 km from Ahmedabad. Also, a six-line express-way is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs7,000 crore.
