The number of mosquitoes has definitely reduced in Ahmedabad, a data released by the Entomology department of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) said.

The average mosquito density was 0.88 until July. The count was 4.39 in 2016 and 2.27 in 2017.

How is mosquito density being measured?

The civic body uses a simple method to calculate mosquito density. "The AMC staff sprays pyrethrum in a room and collects the mosquito that falls in the white bedsheet they spread on the floor. We calculate the mosquitoes with a binocular microscope," said Rajesh Sharma, an entomologist at AMC, said. "Later, we identify and categorise them into types and sub-types," said Sharma.

"There are two reasons for it. The main reason is the rain which is not adequate for vector breeding. Secondly, our anti-larval activity is for the source reduction," Bhavin Solanki, in-charge medical officer, said,

"In addition, our Entomology Department works around the year. It has formed strategies month and pocket wise. Our team is monitoring the vector-borne cases," added Solanki.

"Through consistent effort, our team has brought down the number of malaria, dengue and falciparum cases," said Solanki. However, he said that mosquito breeding may increase if the rains continue for a few more days.

BREEDING SITES AT LJ COLLEGE

Health department of the AMC served notice to eight units for having mosquito breeding sites on their premises. Also, mosquito breeding sites were found at LJ college campus, where the team has undertaken anti-larval activity. The list includes construction sites – Arise construction site, Devasya construction, City Great construction, Sky Kalasagar construction, Metro construction site, Malani construction, and two factories.
