Negligence on the part of VS Hospital authorities led to the exchange of dead bodies after post mortem on Wednesday.

Family of one of the deceased — Nazma Pathan — were taken aback to find they have been handed a body of another girl — Tina Thakor. The Gomtipur-based family immediately rushed to the hospital and reported the matter. Luckily, Nazma’s body was yet to be handed to the Thakor family.

How did this happen?
Both — Nazma and Tina — were admitted to the burn unit of the hospital. The duo succumbed to their injuries on Wednesday morning after which the autopsy was carried out. However, after the autopsy the nametag on the body got exchanged which led to the goof up. It was only after Nazma’s mother spotted that the mehndi her daughter had applied on her legs for Eid was missing.

Speaking to dna, Nazma’s brother Ajaz Shaikh said, “After realising it was someone else, we immediately rushed to hospital to get back our sister’s body.”

Corporator of Gomtipur ward, Iqbal Shaikh said that the issue was serious and needs explanation. “In Islam, we do not believe in burning of dead bodies. What would have happened had  Nazma’s body been burnt by the Hindu family?” he said.
