The Congress in Gujarat was shattered after its woman MLA from Unjha, Dr Asha Patel, resigned from the party on Saturday morning. Sources told this newspaper that more MLAs are planning to quit the Congress and join the saffron brigade. Dr Patel was a supporter of PAAS leader Hardik Patel. She would raise questions over issues such as women education and empowerment and point fingers at the Gujarat government during the assembly sessions.

The buzz gained momentum after reports of some Congress MLAs met Chief Minister Vijay Rupani at his bungalow in Gandhinagar this week. The MLAs included Alpesh Thakor, an MLA from Radhanpur and Gujarat Kshatriya Thakor Sena leader. Adding a few more name to the bandwagon are MLA from Bayad Dhavalsinh Zala, from Bechraji Bharatji Thakor, from Patan Kirit Patel, from Chotila Rujvij Makwana, from Savarkundla Pratap Dudhat and Jamjodhpur MLA Chirag Kalariya also is high.

Reacting on this, Patan MLA Kirit Pate said, "I am not joining BJP in any case, but they had tried to defect me by mounting political pressure." While Rutvij Makwana also denied the buzz saying, "I am satisfied with Congress leadership and no one from BJP has approached me."

Congress chief Amit Chavda, however, expressed fear. He said, "BJP is trying to defect our MLAs by luring or intimidating them. They try to conceal their failure by defection." Reacting to Asha Patel's resignation, he said, "The conspiracy was hatched overnight. She was present at the party meeting at Ahmed-abad on Friday till late evening and she did not express her dismay or any complaint."

CM Rupani said that Asha Patel opened the cards of Congress that nothing was going well in that party as she expressed her resentment with supreme leadership in a party of Rahul Gandhi too.

Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel said: "Congress leaders from entire Gujarat, including Saurashtra, South Gujarat, and North Gujarat, are in contact with us and they have expressed a desire to join BJP so as they could work better for the people in their territory. We welcome all who wish to join our party for the sake of society."
