At last, the penny dropped. A day after the search committee recommended three names, the state education department on Thursday, announced the name of MN Patel — principal of LD College of Engineering — as vice chancellor of Gujarat University, the largest university in the state.

The 62-year-old Patel had been heading LD College of Engineering, the state’s oldest engineering college, for the past 10 years. Known for his administrative acumen, he has also been member secretary of the Admission Committee for Professional Courses for the same number of years. In fact, Patel’s name had been doing the rounds ever since the GU authorities began search for the new V-C.

One of his colleagues at LD said Patel was wholly responsible for the development of infrastructure at the college. “He not only developed the LD campus by coming up with good roads and adequate buildings but also got grants and projects from the World Bank to buy the best equipment to help students. Patel also worked hard to get autonomy for the college and was even instrumental in introducing online exam at engineering colleges,” said the colleague.

According to him, Patel, a disciplined administrator, may not be good news for lazy and irresponsible officials at GU. “He comes early to work and leaves late, expecting the same from others. His main forte is his power to make decisions,” he said.

Patel, a civil engineer by profession, has several papers and two books to his name, too. The VC-designate, who is also said to be in the good books of revenue minister Anandiben Patel, was considered for the vice chancellorship of the newly founded Gujarat Technological University, too. The government, however, appointed Akshai Aggarwal V-C there.

GU authorities speeded up the search for V-C as the term of acting V-C Mukul Shah, who is pro-vice chancellor, ends in July. Shah had been heading the varsity after former V-C Adesh Pal was removed within just 11 months of being appointed to the coveted post.
