Mining: Five MoUs account for 85% of Rs 16,000 cr investment in 977 proposals

Five big-ticket MoUs account for 85% of the total investment proposed in close to 1,000 Memorandums of Understanding signed in mining and mineral-based segment, MoU data shows.

As many as 977 MoUs in mining and mineral space were signed during the three-day Vibrant Gujarat Summit, deputy CM Nitin Patel said on Sunday.

According to a senior official, these 977 MoUs, which involve projects spread over 32 districts, proposed investment of Rs16,000 crore, and total employment generation of 62,000.

MoU data accessed by DNA shows that five MoUs account for more than 85% of the total proposed investment. Four of the five MoUs are related to cement / clinker plants.

Adani Cementation signed MoU for a cement/clinker plant at Lakhpat in Kutch with an investment of Rs4,500 crore. The project also includes limestone mining.

Swan Construction, controlled by businessman Nikhil Merchant, signed Rs5,000 crore MoU to set up a cement/clinkering plant, captive power plant, and related infra in Kutch. The project would be on the basis of long term supply of limestone agreement with GMDC. Merchant is also promoter of Swan Energy, which is developing a floating LNG terminal in the state at a cost of Rs5,900 crore.

Sanghi Cement signed MoU to invest Rs1,500 crore for expanding its Sanghipuram plant capacity from 4 million tonne to 8.6 million tonne, while JSW Cement proposed Rs1,000 crore investment for a cement plant in Kutch.

City-based developer to set up granite export centre

City-based Safal Constructions, which is into development of high-end residential and commercial projects, signed MoU to invest Rs1,600 crore to create an export centre for granite in Mehsana.

"We aim to make Gujarat the leader in granite exports and target major consumers of end products of granite in Europe, Middle East, and North America," the company said.

MOIL MoU for manganese exploration

Central government owned MOIL signed Rs250 crore MoU for manganese exploration in Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, and Panchmahal. The company would explore feasibility, and conduct joint mining operations, as well as set up value addition plant with GMDC.

Highest MoUs in Kutch

Kutch, which is rich in various minerals such as limestone, bauxite, lignite, fire clay, China clay, black trap, among others, attracted 75 MoUs, followed by Morbi with 60, Porbandar with 35, and Banaskantha with 30.
