Work on four kilometres of the East-West corridor of Metro-Link Express for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad (MEGA) is complete. The phase 1 work for the 14-km stretch began in May. "We expect to complete the work by 2020.
So far, we've dug 4 km. We have purchased expensive automatic Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) to expedite the process," said IP Gautam, Managing Director, MEGA.
"We are also monitoring the device performance and observing its impact on the earth. We're regulating the speed of machine for precautions," he said.
The metro tunnel that starts from Saraspur has crossed Kalupur railway station. "We have laid 4 mt lining by working every day, against a daily average of 10 to 12 mt," a senior MEGA official said. The trains have been asked to cross this area slowly as more than 300 mt tracks will be laid here.
MEGA engineers have found water at 15 mt from the ground level in Gheekanta. In Kalupur, water was found at 20 mt from the ground. "We are putting a lining over the structure of the underground to protect it from dampening," an engineer said.
There are around 19 heritages structures on the underground metro route. To make the tunnel there is a challenge. "Maintaining norms of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), we've designed the way at more than 100 mt from the heritage buildings. We're decreasing the speed of the work there. Also, real-time measuring is being done to know the effect of excavation on the earth and the and buildings," said the Metroman of Ahmedabad. MEGA engineers have said 20 structures are at risk because of the ongoing work. The underground network is 6.35km.
