A mega traffic drive was initiated in the city on Friday under a joint operation of the Ahmedabad Police department and Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). The drive took place in the eastern part of the city, focused on illegal parking and encroachment by hawkers on roads.

A team of over 200 policemen were deployed in the drive along with AMC officers. Their objective was to deal with vehicles which were blocking the road. The police team consisted of the Additional Commissioner of Police (Sector 2) Ashok Kumar Yadav, three DCP level officers, six ACP level officers, 10 police inspectors and around 200 other policemen.

Ashok Yadav, Additional Commissioner of Police (Sector-2), said, "The mega drive was not initiated to simply enforce the law, but also to make people aware about what they were doing wrong when they were breaking the law. We imposed fines on many people and issued notices to the offenders. Not just that, but we also gave warnings to people who didn't know what they were doing wrong and educated them about parking rules."

During the drive, AMC officers also removed illegal encroachments on the road which had extended to a point where it was creating trouble for commuters.

The drive has been divided into three parts and each will be carried out under the direct supervision of the DCPs of the respective zones. One of the drives was carried out by the DCPs of Zone 5 and Zone 6. It extended across 15 kilometres, starting from Sarangpur market area to Rakhiyal, Ajit Mill, Garibnagar, Bapunagar and other areas of the city. The second phase of the drive will happen on Saturday which will be carried out by the DCP of Zone 4 in Dariyapur, Shahibaug, Sardarnagar, Naroda and Meghaninagar areas of the city.

"During the 15km drive, around 1,000 notices were issued to shopkeepers by the police, around 50 vehicles were seized, Rs 27,000 in fines were taken from offenders and 150 vehicles were booked for illegal parking. We will be doing the drive in Zone 4 areas as well on Saturday," Yadav further added.

2ND LEG OF DRIVE

2nd phase of drive will take place on Saturday which will be carried out by the DCP of Zone 4 in Dariyapur, Shahibaug, Sardarnagar, Naroda and Meghaninagar.
