Gujarat government on Thursday formally announced the registration of farmers for selling of groundnut at Minimum Support Price (MSP) from November 1. The purchase shall start from November 15.

On the other side, the merchants of grains in Saurashtra region have given the call of close with the demands of implementation of Bhavantar scheme.

Reports have come from Saurashtra that market yards remained closed due to strike by merchants and transactions of crores of rupees could not happen during the day. If situation prevails, it could affect to rural economy.

The merchants have been demanding to implement the scheme so that farmers can get more price for their produces. They cited the reason that farmers can get good prices only when government announce purchase at MSP, but Bhavantar scheme would enable to get them good prices for all sorts of commodities.

The government, however, denied to implement the scheme. "Bhavantar scheme is very complexed and there is no proper mechanism existing in Gujarat to implement it. It is not like farmers would benefit more through that scheme but merchants are doing it for their own interest so that they can get more commission," agriculture minister RC Faldu said.

"There is no reason to believe that the strike of merchants paralised the transactions in marketing yards. Only Rajkot and Jetpur market yards remained close but we are firm that they also will open soon. Registration by farmers got good response in entire state including Saurashtra, Kutch and North Gujarat region," Faldu added.

Faldu announced that on first day of registration, 4,065 farmers registered for selling groundnuts at MSP.

Sawing of groundnuts is done in the area of more than 4,708 hectare and production of 27 lakh metric ton groundnut is expected in current year.

The minister also cleared that the registration process would continue till the end of the month and unto the last farmer of state registered online.

The server down issues also were reported on the initial day and many of the farmers could not register. The minister said that there was some technical issue and instructions were passed to correct the errors.
