Like every year, the worshippers of Ganpati were very thrilled when the young god landed on earth this year. Cut. Tradition: The festival ends on the 10th day and the idols go into the water.

Yes, the sad news: it’s not just in little quantity of water that one might sacrifice, but they’re left in waterbodies allowing the artificial colours to damage the entire natural existence.

No offence, but the immersion is an assault to the environment. Taking the lesson to their heart, several families have now prudently decided to avoid using POP(plaster of Paris) and thermocol Idols. Instead, they have switched to clay Idols.

One such society in Ahmedabad is Prernashikhar Society, Bodakdev. The families here bring approximately a 2 to 3-feet clay idol of the Ganpati. The visarjan takes place three days after Ganesh Chaturthi. They immerse the idol in a tub until the colour dissolves. And the best is the clay is recycled to grow plants. “We immersed the idol in a tub. the colour dissolves in a few hours,” said Sudha Menon, a resident of the society.

Sanjay Nayak’s family from Ahmedabad celebrates the festival in an eco-friendly way by bringing a clay idol about 2 feet. Visarjan is done after 5 days at home. The idol is immersed in the same way it is done in water bodies. They immerse the idol in a big tub by chanting the mantras and wait until the idol is completely dissolved. Later, they use the clay at home to grow plants.

“We welcomed the Lord, made of mud. We immersed the idol in a bucket of water at home only. We poured the water on plants after the idol dissolved in it,” said Sanjay.

Another family which celebrates the festival in an eco-friendly way is Dhara Panchal’s. The family brings home a clay Idol of the Lord a day before Ganesh Chaturthi and installs it on a raised platform.

The idol is just one foot. The Panchals have been celebrating Ganeshotsav for last 2 years and immerse the idol after 5 days of Ganesh Chaturthi. They immerse the clay idol in a tub of water at their home and when the clay Idol is dissolved completely in water they use that it in a vase to grow plants.
