Lok Sabha Election 2019: Reserved seats and rural areas trump urban centres

Chief Minister Vijay Rupani's home town of Rajkot saw 63.12 per cent voting, while Surat recorded 63.99%, just marginally higher than the state average.

Urban voters may be more aware of their rights as citizens, but it appears from voting trends that rural folk are more aware of their duties as citizens. Voting trends from Tuesday's Lok Sabha elections across Gujarat show that urban centres were outvoted by the voters from rural Gujarat, especially those reserved or dominated by tribal voters.

The Ahmedabad East seat, from where MLA Hasmukh Patel was pitted against Congress's Geeta Patel, saw 60.77 per cent provisional voting. Similarly, Ahmedabad West seat, which saw a fight between MP Dr Kirit Solanki and former Rajya Sabha MP Raju Parmar, recorded 59.82 per cent turnout. Bhavnagar in Saurashtra saw 58.41 per cent turnout as BJP MP Bhartiben Shiyal was pitted against Congress's Manhar Patel.

Vadodara saw the highest voter turnout among all urban centres, and the fifth highest in the state. BJP had repeated MP Ranjanben Bhatt as its candidate, and over 67.26 per cent voters exercised their franchise.

The highest turnouts, however, were in seats tribal reserved or dominated seats.

In Valsad, reserved for ST candidates, 74.09 per cent of the registered voters voted, the highest in the state. Similarly, Bardoli ST seat, which saw Congress's Tushar Chaudhary pitted against BJP MP Prabhu Vasava, reported 72.92 per cent voting, the second highest.

In the third place was Chhota Udepur ST seat, which recorded 72.91 per cent voting, while Bharuch, the only seat where a three-way contest was expected, saw 71.77 per cent voting.

The Dahod ST, which had a direct contest between union minister Jashwantsinh Bhabhor and former MP Babu Katara, had 66.05 per cent turnout.

The Patidar-dominated Amreli seat, which saw leader of Opposition Paresh Dhanani face off against MP Naran Kachhadiya, recorded 55.73 per cent, the lowest in the state.

Porbandar with 56.77 per cent recorded the second lowest turnout, while Kutch SC seat saw 57.83 per cent.

Surendranagar, which saw a direct fight between Mahendra Munjpara of BJP and Congress's Soma Patel, recorded 57.84 per cent polling. Among other rural seats, Sabarkantha saw over 67.25 per cent turnout, while neighbouring Banaskantha recorded 64.71 per cent, and Gandhinagar 64.95 per cent.

  • The constituency with the highest voter turnout was Valsad (74 per cent)
  • Bardoli, reserved for ST candidates, was in second place (72.92%)
  • In third place was Chhota Udepur, which recorded 72.91% voting
  • Dahod, another reserved seat, saw a 63.38% turnout
