A lion carcass was found in private farmland near Hasnapur village in Visavadar range of Gir (West) forest division. The animal is believed to have died of natural causes, a forest official said and added the new death has nothing to do with any infection. Interestingly, 23 lions died in Dalkhaniya range in 20 days. "Moreover, it is far from the Dalkhaniya range where the infections were reported. This is a different range in a different division," said the official. When asked about the 'natural cause' that could kill a lion, the officer said they have sent the samples to the FSL to know the exact cause.

"The lion was aged between 2-3 years and was found dead in a private farmland. The dead body was three to four days old and putrefaction had started," said a Gujarat forest department official.

It should be noted that the death of 23 lions was reported from the Dalkhaniya range of the Gir (east) division in Amreli district.

Following the deaths, 33 lions were shifted to a rescue centre in the sanctuary and are being treated for possible infections, forest officials have said. According to a 2015 census, Gir is home to 523 lions.
