A day after leader of opposition Arun Jaitley defended BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on a blog on his website, suspended IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt has written a letter to senior leader of the saffron party Arun Jaitley challenging him to a national debate on any issue pertaining to post-Godhra riots in Gujarat.

“It would also be my pleasure to have a national debate with you on any issue pertaining to the Gujarat carnage of 2002 at a forum/venue and timing of your choice,” Bhatt said in his brief letter.

He added, “I had refrained from joining issues with you till date as I did not wish to dignify your politically motivated, fallacious comments and utterances regarding the Gujarat carnage of 2002, but your latest blog has prompted me to write this brief letter to you.”

Addressing Jaitley, Bhatt said that the issue regarding the role and culpability of Narendra Modi is still before the Justice Nanavati-Mehta Commission of Inquiry. “Despite the assurance of advocate general of Gujarat, the state administration has not provided me access to those 47 crucial documents. The above facts will clearly indicate to you that I am yet to file my detailed affidavit before the justice Nanavati and justice Mehta Commission regarding the role of Narendra Modi and his administration in the Gujarat carnage of 2002 and consequently the issue regarding the role and criminal culpability of Narendra Modi is still at large before the commission of inquiry,” he added in the letter.

In his latest blog on his website, Jaitley had reasoned how the “sustained campaign (conspiracy)” against Modi on the post-Godhra riots “has collapsed as it was based on falsehoods”.

Former DGP RB Sreekumar had also produced a letter on Tuesday in which he had appealed to Modi for initiation of concrete measures for expeditious justice delivery and genuine relief and rehabilitation of 2002 riot victims in Gujarat.
