Chief Justice of Odisha High Court KS Jhaveri on Thursday said the judiciary is going through a rough patch, with the growing backlog of cases pending before various courts in the country. He was in the city on Thursday to take part in the felicitation ceremony organised by Gujarat High Court Advocates' Association (GHCAA).

Justice Jhaveri said that steps need to be taken to ensure that the growing backlog of cases is brought down and lawyers have to play an important role in ensuring the same. He urged the lawyers to come to the court prepared with their case and not to sought unnecessary adjournments that slows down the justice delivery system. He said the bar and the bench have to make joint efforts to ensure that the trust of people in the judiciary is strengthened.

Apart from Justice Jhaveri, Supreme Court judges Justice MR Shah and Justice R Subhash Reddy were also felicitated by GHCAA.

Speaking on the occasion, Justice MR Shah said that he was very strict in adjourning the hearing of cases, which ensured that counsels of the state government came prepared with the matter rather than seeking adjournments. Remembering his days in the Gujarat High Court, Justice Shah said that he still misses the Manekchowk of Gujarat High Court, a meeting place of lawyers known for quick chats and gossips, something which is not available in Delhi.

Justice Reddy expressed his gratitude towards the high court bar association for the love, warmth, and support rendered to him during his tenure as the chief justice of Gujarat High Court. Addressing an auditorium packed with retired and sitting Supreme Court and high court judges, along with lawyers, Justice Reddy said lawyers in Gujarat have a great potential to become good judges. He said lawyers should leave their monetary gains and they should definitely consider to join the bench at a certain point in their life. On a lighter note, he said that if monetary consideration is the only consideration for lawyers, then they should shift base to Delhi where lawyers make windfall gains on Monday and Friday and relax for the entire week.

Meanwhile the Acting Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court AS Dave shared several anecdotes about the judges leaving everyone in splits
