Gujarat government is going to grant land for social, religious, health or educational institutions with a generous approach. The government is changing the policy to grant land to such institutions and the land will be available at around 50% rates of market rates to such institution, sources said. Any trust working for the ‘causes’ can apply to the land and government will give the same at discounted rates.

A senior official in the government said, “We have a policy for land grants to trusts which run hospitals, educational or social institutions but that needs changes as per the present demand and situation. The market rates for the land in the state has also increased in many folds so that the government is thinking to incentivise the scheme furthermore.”

The state government gives land to such institutions at a token annual rent of Re 1 and does not collect revenue on such land from the beneficiary institution. The state government, however, stopped giving government had put the break on granting land to such institutions for many years and several organisations only were granted land in special cases after cabinet’s approval.

“This happened because of irregularities by many of the private trust as they either changed the purpose of the land be granted to them or did not run the activities related to the social cause. The government, however, is mulling to give them land at concessional rates in place of granting them on annual rent system,” said the sources in government.

The evaluation of land also will be done by the district committee meant for the purpose and the government will charge the beneficiary institution accordingly.

Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel said, “The policy is under the consideration of the government and the social, educational and medical institutions will get the land at concessional rates but the procedure is underway and the same will be announced soon.”

A senior official in the government said, “The government already has the policy but it was put on back burner as the rush was seen from the organisations to get government land. The government is adopting generous approach for such organisations now as the Lok Sabha polls are falling next year and such organisation could help the ruling party at the best in polls.”
