Bavaliya won with a lead of more than 19,000 votes against Congress candidate Avsar Nakiya.
The Minister for water supply and animal husbandry Kunvarji Bavaliya took oath as MLA on Tuesday after he was elected in the recently held Jasdan by-polls. Bavaliya won with a lead of more than 19,000 votes against Congress candidate Avsar Nakiya.
Speaker of Gujarat Assembly Rajendra Trivedi administered the oath to six time MLA Bavaliya. Senior ministers from the Gujarat Cabinet, Bhupendrasinh Chudasama, Kaushik Patel and Vasan Ahir were present with Bavaliya on the occasion.
Bavaliya's arch rival and BJP leader Bharat Boghra's absence was significant. Boghra was not happy with the party's act to defect Bavaliya from Congress and to give him a ticket from Jasdan. Boghra's resentment against Bavaliya is due to his chances fading after the latter's entry in the BJP.
Boghra could not be reached for comment while Bavaliya avoided to react on the issue. However, supporters of Bavaliya raised their brows over Boghra's absence.
One of the supporters of Bavaliya, Gatubhai Geeda who came all the way from Jasdan to remain presence in ceremony said, "Boghra had to bit dust in polls in past because of Bavaliya's persona and hold over common people in Jasdan. Now when Bavaliya is in BJP, he showed hostility. He worked for the party in recent by polls as the high command had ordered him, but his resentment was reflected today."
Bavaliya had left Congress in July last year and joined BJP. Soon after joining the party, CM Vijay Rupani made him the cabinet minister in his government. The fight between Bavaliya and Nakiya was expected to be a tough one but Bavaliya won with considerably large margin of votes. The polls were held on December 20 and results were declared on December 23.
