Swachhta rankings of the civic body-run schools were announced on Friday. In a shocking revelation, while only one school out of 375 scored more than 90 points, four schools scored more than 40.

"Gandhinagar shala number 2 scored 90.8 points out of 100. It is the only school to secure more than 90. We have done the ranking on the same lines of the Swachh Bharat Mission's (SBM) Swachhta ranking for the city," said Manvita Baradi, director of Urban Management Center (UMC).

While Shapur Shala number 2 scooped the second position, Ellisbridge shala number 29and 30 received the third rank. The next survey of schools will be held in January.

UMC has designed the ranking system of SBM. Next year onwards, the same will happen to all government schools across India. Before the survey, the school staff and kids were trained about proper sanitation.

Also, UMC has designed a programme, Ahmedabad Sanitation Action Lab (ASAL), under which they reviewed all the schools. While screening, they came across issues such as they increase the salary of sweepers. "The sweepers were getting Rs400 per month, which was very less. After discussing with it civic body, they are now getting around Rs1800 a month. Also, a sanitation kit and equipment were provided to them," said Meghan Malhotra, deputy director of UMC. AMC on Friday conducted cleanliness drive at the heritage monuments of the city.
