Vadgam MLA and Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani on Thursday questioned the city police's recent action against bootleggers in the state, calling it nothing but an eyewash.

The leader made the statements following a visit to the Civil Hospital where three people from Kubernagar were attacked allegedly by a bootlegger for complaining against him. Mevani alleged that the police were hand-in-glove with the bootlegger. It should be noted that three people have been arrested in connection with the attacks.

Mevani also met DCP Zone 4 Shweta Shreemali and JCP admin Vipul Agrawal to make a representation about the rising nuisance of bootleggers in the area and the police inaction regarding the same.

"Recently, the city police showcased its actions against bootleggers claiming to have nabbed many. Three days ago, three people from the area who dared to raise voice against the bootleggers were beaten up mercilessly. One of the injured is a 14-year-old girl," said Mevani. The leader alleged that according to the victim it was the police inspector of Sardarnagar himself who had tipped off the bootlegger about the victims. "The victims have been making representation to the Sardarnagar police for quite some time about bootlegging and liquor-making. No one bothered to do anything," alleged Mevani.

He said the victims were not only attacked, but the goons prevented the 108 emergency service providers from entering the lane to help them. "It alone shows how much the bootleggers fear the cops. Some days ago, the cops take action against bootleggers and within days the bootleggers attack people with complete impunity," said Mevani. The injured were taken to Civil Hospital in a police vehicle. In fact, one of the representations that Mewani made to additional CP Vipul Agrawal was that the family be given protection and personnel of a police station other than Sardarnagar police be deployed for the same.

PLAINTS UNHEARD

  • Jayesh Parmar, a resident who went to Sardarnagar police, said: “But the inspector always claimed to be in bandobast. I believe the cops tipped the bootleggers off about my complaint.” Four men came with swords, sticks.

MEVANI HELPED

  • Jayesh Parmar believes that had it not been for Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani, the bootleggers would still be at large. “They were only arrested after Mewani decided to make a representation in the matter,” said Parmar.
