The ambitious month-long Jal Sanchay Abhiyan officially concluded on Thursday. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani at a ceremony in Dhandhuka town in Ahmedabad district. The CM said the drive would achieve its goal when the state receives adequate rainfall this monsoon, as predicted by the Met department.

As part of the drive, the Gujarat government has deepened lakes, tanks, reservoirs and constructed new check dams and bori bandhs beside desilting river beds and canals. The project covered 40 locations across the state. The drive received public support following a government call.

People who contributed to the drive, financially or through labour, were felicitated at the concluding ceremony. All members of the Rupani Cabinet and other office bearers were present at the event. "The efforts invested in this drive would give the Midas touch to the development of Gujarat region in near future," the CM said at the event. "As development is highly dependent on availability of water, the drive has enabled us to store more water on surface and increase ground water levels."

He accused the Congress of levelling false corruption charges. "People of Gujarat contributed wholeheartedly to make this drive successful as they understand that this drive was not for the benefit of any individual or group of people but it was for the larger good of the whole society. The shortsightedness of the opposition party Congress has exposed them as they were alleging corruption in this drive. But all their charges are baseless," Rupani added.

Deputy CM Nitin Patel was at Martoli village in Mehsana district where he felicitated those who donated towards the cause.

"This drive is symbolic of our government's foresight. We also exhibited good management in water distribution sector – despite the Narmada river almost drying up and Gujarat receiving very little water, no scarcity was felt anywhere in the state." The government claimed to have achieved 110% of the target set for the drive.
