Amdavadis continued to brave the onslaught of the merciless sun even on Tuesday as temperatures soared above 44.3° Celsius, two degrees above normal, leaving hapless citizens high and dry. Temperature in the city is likely to touch 45°Celsius on Wednesday.

With this, the city has also broken several past years’ record for highest temperature in May. Meanwhile, the Meteorological department (Met) has warned of heatwave-like conditions for some parts of Gujarat including Ahmedabad.

Idar, Rajkot, Amreli and Surendranagar were some of the other districts that recorded maximum temperature of 44° Celsius. Amdavadis continued to stay indoors to escape the sweltering heat, while the shopkeepers too preferred to down shutters during the hot afternoon.  “It is too hot to keep the shop open and I hardly get any customer between 1 and 4 pm. Therefore, I decided to keep my shop closed during summer afternoons,” said Rajiv Patel of Pramukh Medical Shop in Satellite area.

Chirag Vyas, another professional working in CG Road said that he is planning a trip to the cool climes of Kashmir to escape the excruciating heat. “April was bearable but May is not. I am glad that I will be spending the rest part of May in Kashmir and hopefully the rains would have come by the time I return,” said Vyas.
