The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sleuths investigating the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case are believed to have come across some startling information about Javed Sheikh alias Pranesh Pillai’s collaboration with the IB officers. Investigators indicate that the killed-in-encounter terrorist was actually working and collaborating with the handler of the central Intelligence Bureau (IB). He is believed to have been operating for them since 2003 in Gujarat – the time when NDA government was ruling the nation.
Sources said that Javed, who was killed along with his friend Ishrat Jahan and two others in June 2004, by the sleuths of Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) in a staged gunfight, had been an important person in many IB operations in the state since 2003.
Sources also said that the IB input, that became the base to eliminate Sadik Jamal Mehtar, too was generated through him in 2003. Mehtar was the first person to be killed in a staged encounter by DG Vanzara, then deputy commissioner of police-DCB, after 2002 riots. Javed, according to the sources, had also played a role in conveying to the IB that the attack on the Sabarmati Express was a pre-planned conspiracy. The input was later on accepted as genuine by the court of law.
Javed was operating in Gujarat in a period from 2000 to 2004 and was privy to many IB operations then. However, ironically he himself was killed due to a similar IB input.
The CBI is currently probing as to what went wrong in the rapport with Javed and the IB officials, which was at its best during and after 2002 – the time of Godhra and post-Godhra riots.
This information is believed to have been revealed after the questioning of suspended IPS officers - GL Singhal, DG Vanzara as well as IB official Rajendra Kumar. Sources also said that Singhal and Vanzara had revealed the information that could lead to the questioning of other officers at IB.
Javed, Ishrat Jahan, Amjad Ali and Zeeshan Johar were killed by the cops from DCB on June 14, 2004 near Kotarpur Water Works in Naroda area.
