Bhavnagar Collector Harshad Patel held a peace meeting on Friday with local residents in Mahuva town after the murder of a VHP leader led to communal tension in the area. Members of both Hindu and Muslim communities went on a rampage after the killing on Tuesday night.

The collector issued a notification suspending internet service for the next seven days in the area. The step was taken to ensure peace and stop rumours from spreading through social media. A video of the violence went viral on social media which showed a mob setting fire to several commercial establishments. Local schools and colleges have been asked to remain closed till the situation is brought under control.

Jayesh Gujaria (22), newly appointed president of the VHP in Mahuva town, was stabbed to death by four persons from a rival group on Tuesday. Three of the accused have been identified as Islam, Imran and Bapudi while the fourth person could not be identified. A dispute is believed to have erupted between them over VHP banners that Gujaria was putting in the minority area for Navratri festival.

Gujaria and his friend Mahesh Majithiya (23) were allegedly attacked by the accused with swords, knives and pipes. He succumbed to his injuries after he was taken to hospital following the attack. "The situation is under control and a team of State Reserved Police Force (SRPF) has also been deployed for law and order situation," said a police official.

The security has been tightened as CM Vijay Rupani is visiting Bhavnagar on Saturday to launch Ghogha-Dahej Ropax service. A spiritual discourse of Morari Bapu is also scheduled to start on the same day. This comes after the recent incidents of communal violence reported from Chhasra village of Kutch over political rivalry.
