In a first, the students of MICA have attempted to look at the other side of the Mahabharata story.

They are all set to give Amdavadis the narration of Mahabharata from Draupadi's perspective. A group of 45 students from first and second year of their flagship PGDM-Communications programme have enacted a dance drama 'Born From Fire' which is an adaptation of the novel 'The Palace of Illusions' by the celebrated author Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni.

The play enacted by Sankalp, theatre society of MICA is the story of a woman who brought about the fiercest war that mankind has ever seen. The play depicts her journey from a young naive girl to a wise queen who has seen the darkest colours of mankind.

As a part of this tradition, each year, MICAns come together as one force to stage a grand play for its Amdavadi audience. In the past 14 years, Sankalp has put up renowned works such as Girish Karnad's 'Tuglaq', Vijay Tendulkar's 'Encounter in Umbugland', Dharmavir Bharti's 'Suraj Ka Satwan Ghoda', Woody Allen's 'Death' among others.

Speaking about the play, directors of the play Arundhati Menon and Shubaish Kanodia said, "Mahabharata over the years has been depicted in many ways from the various perspective but Draupadi's story has never been told. This play is unique as the lead is a female. The story is about her journey, her struggles. Says Shubaish, "We have always grown up hearing one side of the story of Mahabharata, mainly of disrobing (cheer-haran). But this book gives us a glimpse of characters which no one would have thought of. The book also asks some very important questions, especially about the patriarchal practices."

While we have retained the core of the plot, we have however added certain elements. The biggest challenge for the team was to not let their pre-conceived notions about the epic saga while directing it.

The play will be enacted on October 26 and 27 at HK auditorium, Ashram road.
