Students of the Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA) have formed a dedicated club to discuss, share ideas with industry experts and get hands-on exposure in operation management.
The forum - known as Operation Club - aims to promote student engagement in areas of operations by facilitating industry interfacing, collaborations with other management institutes knowledge building, research and cross-disciplinary applications.
The club is the brainchild of three students—Apurva Sule, Prasanna R and Navaneeth KP. While Sule and Navaneeth are students of Post Graduate Program in Management (PGP), Prasanna is a doctoral student of Production and Quantitative Methods faculty.
The concept has got a warm response as about 130 PGP students have already joined the club, which was formed in October 25.
They feel that operation management in India have got a stimulus following the surge of e-commerce companies like Amazon, Flipkart and Infibeam. And the interest shown my multinationals like Wal-Mart following announcement of FDI has given it a further boost. But many in the campus are still unaware of the varied opportunities that Operations has to offer.
“The idea to form the club surfaced as they observed perceptible difference between what students thought job in operation management would offer and what actually it was,” Sule told dna.
“There seemed knowledge gap and so we thought of forming this club as a platform for knowledge sharing. Lots of alumni have made their mark in the filed but the information and definition of operation management seem very low among students, which I believe is not a good thing,” he added.
Besides IIMA, students from other B schools can also join the club, said students.
The club’s activities will include pan-IIM initiatives and publications for knowledge sharing among all the top management schools and a regular operations management blog, where professors will be sharing their research.
Apart from the traditional areas of operation—like logistics and inventory management— newer avenues such as business analytics, distribution network for e-commerce companies will also be under the ambit of the Operations Club.
