Inspector risks life to save man from drowning in Sabarmati river

The cop has been identified as KD Ravaiya, posted at Satellite police station and he is on prohibition period

A 25-year-old man was rescued by the Sub-inspector of Ahmedabad Police from drowning in the Sabarmati river on Sunday night when the devotees were celebrating the Ganesh Visarjan. The cop has been identified as KD Ravaiya, posted at Satellite police station and he is on prohibition period. It has been 45 days till he has been working at the police station.

Ravaiya said he was deployed at the Riverfront route between Ellis bridged and Nehru bridge for Ganesh Visarjan bandobast. While he and his team were standing near the Atal Ghat at around 9,30pm, they saw a man running towards the gate of the ghat and jumped into the Sabarmati River.

Ravaiya and others rushed towards the spot to save him. Soon people started to gather around the place, even some called the Fire rescue team for help.

But before help arrived at the spot, Ravaiya managed to rescue the man for the river by hanging to the wall of the riverfront and pulled him out of the river safely with the help of some of his other team members.

The victim was identified as Firaz Alam, 25, a resident of Shah-e-Alam area and he was rushed to the Civil Hospital for treatment through 108 emergency service.

RUNNING FOR LIFE

Primary investigation revealed that a dispute broke between Alam and a few other men during the Visarjan. He managed to flee from them and jumped into the river to save himself.
