The city woke up to a heavy downpour, overcast skies with thunder and lightning on Tuesday morning, leading to waterlogging in several stretches of the city, affecting traffic movement badly.

Incidents of tree felling and damage to roads were also reported from across the city. Following heavy rains in catchment areas of Sabarmati river, five gates of Vasna barrage were opened to release water, decreasing the water level to 127.5 feet. Vehicular traffic through underpasses in the city was halted for the time being. The inflow of water into city lakes increased due to the rains.

Widespread rains with intermittent spells of heavy rains resulted in heavy waterlogging in areas like Chandlodia, Odhav, Viratnagar, Hatkeshvar, Saijpur underpass, Kotarpur Water Works, Maninagar, Jawahar Chowk, Isanpur village, Jashodanagar, CTM and Bapunagar among others.

There were reports of rain waters entering the colony of Gujarat Housing Board in Khokhra area. The Gor No Kuwo area of Maninagar, which is infamous for waterlogging during monsoon also got waterlogged in spite of the construction of the stormwater line. Lightening has also struck a high-rise residential building in Shela area because of which a part of the terrace was damaged, but no loss of life has been reported. AMC also received 40 complaints of felling of trees.

Gauging The rains

According to a statement by AMC, the city received 86.3 mm rains between 6 am and 8 pm, taking the season’s total to 730.59 mm
The city recorded most of its rains in two spells of one hour each. From 9 am to 10 am it cloaked 31.48 mm rains, from 3 pm to 4 pm it recorded 22.56 mm rains

Heavy and widespread rains had the administration on its toes. Municipal Commissioner Vijay Nehra visited the main control room of the civic body to oversee the operations. He took to Twitter to inform the citizens about the actions taken by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). He said that de-watering pumps have been used at a number of places to pump out water. AMC sanitation workers were seen cleaning the check-pits and especially removing plastic waste, which blocks the drainage of the water. Earlier during the day, he also suggested that citizens should, if possible, stay indoors to avoid waterlogged roads.

India Meteorological Department has predicted that the city will witness cloudy weather for the next few days. Parts of it can also witness light rains.
