A city builder shot dead his wife and two grown-up daughters in sleep, apparently after running up huge debts, the police said on Tuesday. Dharmesh Shah,49, himself alerted the cops after the triple murder.

The chilling crime was committed in a 3BHK apartment at Ratnam Flats in the upscale Vastrapur area. Shah runs Diva Infrastructure, a real estate firm, the police said.

"I have killed my wife and kids, I am at my home. Please come fast," Shah called up the police control room, sending the men in uniform into a frenzy.

The police said Shah got up around 7 am and shot his wife Ami, 48, at the back of her head. He then went to the other bedrooms and opened fire on his daughters Heli, 24, and Diksha, 19, killing both the girls on the spot.

SN Zala, assistant commissioner of police of A division said Shah used a Russian pistol to kill his wife and a 12-bore double barrel gun to shoot his daughters.

The police have found that Shah had suffered losses in business and his debts from banks and friends had piled up to nearly Rs 20 crore. Despite knowing his precarious financial condition, his family was pressing him to raise another Rs 70 lakh for sending his daughter Heli to Deakin University in Australia, said sources.

"Heli had also packed her bags in her room. When his family members couldn't understand his situation and pushed him to the edge, he killed them," said Zala.

Before informing the cops, sources said, Shah called his engineer Nilesh Prajapati and told him that he had wiped out his family and he was going to commit suicide. Prajapati somehow managed to calm Shah down and alerted his younger brother Viren through a conference call.
