In Ahmedabad city, tankers distribute 19 lakh litres water daily

The data reveals that highest number of tankers are being sent to the south zone where 26 tankers do 190 trips in a day.

A day after a court in The water crisis in several areas of the city has worsened. To quench the thirst of citizens, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is depended on tankers.

The data of the civic body states that more than 19 lakh litre of water is being distributed by the tankers. According to the data provided by the officers, on an average AMC sends 70 tankers to different areas to give potable water to the citizens. One tanker has storage capacity of 5000-litre water. These tankers make make about 383 trips to pockets in a single day.

The data reveals that highest number of tankers are being sent to the south zone where 26 tankers do 190 trips in a day.

Followed by 50 trips by 12 tankers in the central zone, 49 trips in the west zone, 40 trips in the east zone, 31 in the south-west zone, 17 in the north zone while one tanker makes six trips to provide water in north-west zone.

Last year more than Rs 2 crore were spent on tankers by the civic body. Leader of opposition, Dinesh Sharma said that people here don't even get water twice a day, and the civic body claims of providing water 24*7. "Around 41 per cent population of the city resides in slums and do not get sufficient water, and the water they get is contaminated.

Majority of the area in south zone do not have proper pipeline network and hence the civic body is providing water via tankers round the year. The civic authority must come up with a solution to this water problem," said Sharma.
