The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) Thursday introduced a 100 per cent fee hike for swimming pool services and roped in a private player for maintaing and operating it. Standing committee chairman Amul Bhatt said the fee was last changed in 2013.

"Currently, we earn between Rs3.25 crore and Rs3.50 crore. Earlier, we used to earn Rs6.8 crore. Private contractors can operate the pools during AMC's non-operation hours." "They have to bear the maintenance cost. We've given them three years contract wherein they can levy charges according to their desire. After a year, we will review their functioning," added Bhatt.

The swimmers association submitted a memorandum to the municipal commissioner stating that the proposal for privatisation and commercialisation of pools must be dropped. "Under the name of public-private partnership (PPP) model, the pool was privatised. Also, instead of the giving a fee relief, they have hiked it. It is sad that before doing so, not a single association member was consulted or contacted," said Jayesh Patel, one of the member.

While the former leader of opposition Badruddin Shaikh said, "Many events are conducted by the civic body where it spends crores of rupees. But, by showing Rs3 crore loss, the ruling party has decided to privatise the pools. The decision clarifies that the civic body or the officers are not working for public welfare." "The event was to oblige a favoured one. This is the nexus of BJP and the administrative wing of the civic body to give such project," added Shaikh.
