A criminal petition has been filed in the Supreme Court stating that though one of the victims in the 2013 self-immolation case of a Nepali family in Rajkot in his dying declaration had stated that Vijay Rupani (now Chief Minister) was indirectly responsible for their extreme, local police are not implicating him in the case.
Petitioner Kaushik Vyas has sought independent investigation into the case besides security to him and his family saying they are receiving threats. The petition alleges that in 2013, Mansinh Gorkha and his family members had immolated themselves in front of the Rajkot Municipal Commissioner's office, as they were frightened by threats they were receiving from two local councillors backed by the then BJP senior leader Vijay Rupani to vacate 850 square yard plot at the Shree Chhotu Nagar Housing Society.
It stated that the plot was allotted to the family by the society's committee in 1978 and the family had then constructed a semi-pakka house there. Following threats, five members of the family succumbed to self-immolation. One of them Girishbhai in his dying declaration had alleged that two local councillors backed by senior BJP leader were harassing to vacate the plot, that compelled them to take the extreme step.
