Gujarat’s porous borders continue aiding the free flow of illicit liquor from neighbouring states, and just in the last 24 months alone, the police has seized Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) worth Rs 231 crore. The statistics were revealed after Opposition MLAs sought district-wise details of seizure of liquor and intoxicating drugs by the police in the last two years. The government provided district-wise details, but what stood out was the staggering value of the total IMFL seized.

As per details provided by the home department, police seized 1.22 crore units of IMFL bottles worth Rs 231 crore, 17 lakh bottles of beer worth Rs 17.87 crore and 16.39 lakh litres of country-made liquor worth Rs 3.07 crore. In addition, they also seized 5,487 kilogrammes of cannabis seeds (ganja) worth Rs 4.25 crore. The data provided by the government also suggests that districts that fall on Gujarat’s borders recorded the highest number of seizures. Arvalli and Sabarkantha districts on the Rajasthan border, Valsad on the Maharashtra border and Union Territories like Daman and Dadra and Nagar Haveli saw the largest number of raids.

Opposition leader Paresh Dhanani said, “The government claims of strict prohibition, but the seizure reveals that the state’s borders are porous and liquor is easily available. The government also does not punish bootleggers with hard sentences, so they keep indulging in this activity.”
