Vadodara, the cultural capital of Gujarat, is all set to become the state’s next educational hub, too. If everything goes according to plan, then the district will soon be home to three new universities, apart from the reputable MS University of Baroda.

Sources in the state education department said 900 acres of land have been identified by the authorities to set up three universities — Indian Institute of Teachers’ Education (IITE), Children’s University and Swarnim Gujarat Sports University.

After several months of land scouting for the government’s pet universities project, the chief minister’s office has now given the green light to the huge chunk of land near Chakori village at Padra Taluka in Vadodara. The land — on the banks of Mahi River — is 17 km away from Padra and 30 km from Anand, sources said. IITE vice-chancellor Kamlesh Joshipura said he had received a letter of confirmation from the chief minister’s office to go ahead with the process.

“Land near Vadodara was chosen keeping two things in mind. First, it is located on the National Corridor and secondly, finding such huge chunks of land in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar was just not possible. So, we started looking for a land near Vadodara,” said an official.

As the land has been identified, the next step would be to begin the process to get notification from the Vadodara collectorate and the state government’s revenue department. The next step would be to chalk out the plan of landscape bifurcation.

“One university will come up on 300 acres, which is three times bigger than the size of a normal varsity. Since these universities will be at same location, plan is to have some common facilities, like ground and auditorium. It would take at least a few months to complete formalities. So, work on the campus might begin after Diwali,” added the official.
