Ninety students of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad have made dream applications during the final placements process that concluded on Thursday. With help of dream application, students get flexibility and choice to opt for the sector of their choice despite having an offer in hand.

This year, variety of new firms participated in the placement process. United Breweries, Etihad Airways, Russell Reynolds, OLAM and SAIF Partners are some of them that recruited students, confirmed professr Amit Karna, Chairperson of Placements. A total of 385 students sat for palcements whereas two students opted for entrepreneurship. Accenture Strategy was the biggest recruiting making 24 offers.

The third cluster comprised 12 cohorts, which included BFSI, Consumer Tech, Core Manufacturing & Infrastructure, Education & Tech, Enterprise Tech, Food & Dairy, Govt. Enterprises, IT Consulting, Pharma & Healthcare, Renewable Energy & GreenTech, Social Enterprises & NGO, and Textiles.

The Consumer Tech cohort recruiters included firms like Microsoft, Ola, Paytm and Uber. Paytm extended the highest number of offers in this cluster, 10 offers, including pre-placement offers, followed by Microsoft that made 8 offers.

Among government firms, Indian Oil Corporation offered one candidate.

Interestingly, Flipkart which had mired into a controversy in 2016 also participated in the placement process.

In 2016, IIM-A and Flipkart were locked in a face-off with the e-commerce major refusing to honour its job commitment to students of the institute for six months, but offered a compensation for the intervening period. Flipkart had then cited restructuring of its businesses as the reason behind deferring the joining dates for campus recruits, and said the new hires will be paid a compensation of Rs 1.5 lakh each.

Commenting on the same, professor Karna said, "Flipkart participated in our process last year as well. The blacklisting as well as deblacklisting of firms is an ongoing process based on the severity of the underlying cause and the discussions between the placement committee and the recruiter."

What is a dream application

After receiving and accepting an offer, a student is still free to make 'Dream' applications in a subsequent cluster.

When a student gets placement of his or her choice – dream offer – it gives them flexibility and choice to build careers in sector of their choice.
