With lakhs of vehicles in the state yet to be fitted with the High Security Registration Plates (HSRPs), the state government is expected to extend the February 15 deadline for installation of the new number plates.
The original deadline to get HSRP installed in every vehicle was to expire on January 15, but the state government extended it by a month till February 15 in view of the large number of vehicles that were yet to get one. The state government had said that vehicles not fitted with the HSRPs would be fined up to Rs 500. However, it seems that the deadline would see another extension.
A senior government official said that at the beginning of February, more than 1.20 crore vehicles out of 2.1 crore vehicles registered with all Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) in the state were still without an HSRP.
At present, the high security plates, which are being installed in the wake of a Supreme Court order, are being fitted in approximately 10,000 vehicles in the state per day. The official said that at the current rate of 10,000 plates in a day, it would take several more months, if not years, to have a HSRP in every vehicle on the road. “We are doing our best. We have deployed more resources to focus on HSRP installation. We have authorised automobile dealers to install these plates. But, the target is so stiff that meeting the deadline is next to impossible,” said a senior official, requesting anonymity. Vipul Mittra, additional chief secretary, ports & transport department (transport), said that the deadline is expected to be extended till March 31, and a formal announcement will be made on February 15.
The RTOs were fitting the HSRPs in vehicles registered after November 2012, and majority of the 1.2 crore vehicles without these plates, are older ones.
