Armed with a budget of Rs 80 lakh, the police department — allegedly the most corrupt government department — is all set to weed out corruption from the state.

Since a majority of officials caught by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) belonged to the police department, the state home department, which controls the police, has come up with a publicity drive to spread awareness among people to curb the menace.

Giving details about the new initiative during a press conference at the ACB headquarters at Shahibaug on Tuesday, ACB director and state director-general of police Amitabh Pathak announced a toll-free number to reach the ACB. Now, people can inform the bureau about any government official demanding bribe on toll-free number — 1800 233 44444.

“People can also log on to our website — www.acb.gujarat.gov.in — or send their complaint on our email cr-acb-ahd@gujarat.gov.in,” said Pathak.

The programme at Shahibaug was also attended by Ashish Bhatia, deputy director of ACB, and Rajni Patel, minister of state for home.

To educate citizens about this new initiative, ACB has charted out a detailed publicity plan. It has also made two short films — Aap ka Ek Kadam and Bhrashtachar Mukt Gujarat — to persuade people against giving bribe and inform the ACB if an official asks for it.

“These films will be shown at multiplexes and on TV channels across the state.
We have also made several slides to raise people’s awareness. These slides will be shown on local TV channels and theatres during breaks. We have also made posters and other advertising campaign material, including posters and print ads. The posters will be pasted behind 440 ST buses across the state,” said Pathak, who admitted that a majority of the officials, caught by the ACB earlier, belonged to the home department.

ACB took the help of a professional ad agency to issue print advertisements and audio jingles.

ACB has also made pamphlets to motivate people to curb corruption. These pamphlets would be given to all the police stations in the state and then, police officers would distribute them among the people.

After arriving at the ACB headquarters on Tuesday morning, Rajni Patel inaugurated an LED screen near the gate to display messages asking the public to approach the ACB without hesitation.

Patel also inaugurated the new ACB logo and its new anthem. “The state government has approved of Rs 80 lakh for ACB’s publicity campaign in various mediums. This is a continuous effort to reach out to all strata of society. This new campaign would even help to curb the menace of corruption in our state,” he said.
