Holi this year may prove dangerous for the state as emergency services are expecting to see a 3% to 15% rise in distress calls. However, there is good news for Ahmedabad as it is expected to witness a dip in emergencies. The city is likely to record an 8% fall in emergency cases on the day of Holi and 7% on the day of Dhuleti.

It should be noted that the average number of emergency cases that the service caters to in Ahmedabad is 490. However, the number of emergency cases during Holi is expected to be around 453 and that on the day of Dhuleti it is expected to be around 455. In fact, if the 108 emergency services’ prediction was to come true, this will be the third consecutive Dhuleti when the number of emergency cases will remain around 456 on the day of Dhuleti.

However, the predictions for the day of Holi is on the higher side, when compared to 2015, 2016 and 2017 when the actual number of emergency cases registered on the day of Choti Holi was 323, 377 and 371 respectively.

The emergency services, in a press release, said road accidents are likely to account for the predicted rise in emergency cases during the festival. “It is a mini vacation and people are likely to travel thus we may see a rise in road traffic accident cases,” said an emergency services official.

Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar are the only major cities in Gujarat that are expected to see a fall in emergency cases during the two-day festival. Other cities such as Rajkot. Surat and Vadodara are expected to see a  rise on Dhuleti.

In terms of percentage, Surendranagar and Aravalli districts are likely to see the highest surge in emergency cases on Dhuleti at 123% and 114%. It should be noted that a lot of tribal population of the state that works as migrant labourers often travel back home for Choti Holi and Dhuleti. Excessive consumption of alcohol also increases the probability of fights and altercations leading to emergency situations in these districts during the holidays.

The 108 emergency services expect the highest number of distress calls with assault incidents. It expects a 280% hike is such cases on Dhuleti.
