A 36-year-old Muslim man from Anand got a new lease of life on Thursday when a 21-year-old brain-dead patient’s heart was transplanted to him at CIMS hospital in Ahmedabad. This was the third live heart transplant in the state, according to doctors.

The donor, 21-year-old Amit Halpati, was a resident of Halpati Vas in Khaparia village, Navsari district. On July 8, Halpati sustained serious injuries after his motorcycle skidded at Changa village. He was admitted to New Civil Hospital (NCH) in Surat.

“On July 12, Halpati was declared brain-dead by a team of doctors at NCH and his family members gave their consent to donate his organs,” said Nilesh Mandlewala, director of Donate Life, an NGO working for organ donation in Surat.

“We then contacted the Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC) and CIMS Hospital to know their requirement. His kidneys, liver and pancreas were accepted by IKDRC, while heart was donated to Anand resident Sohel Vohra who was undergoing treatment at CIMS,” Mandlewala added.
