On expected lines, the state government has extended the deadline for installation of High-Security Registration Plates (HSRPs) in all vehicles will March 31.
The original deadline for HSRP installation expired on January 15, but it was extended till February 15. However, looking at a large number of vehicles still without the high-security plates, the state government extended the deadline once again on Wednesday.
"The deadline for HSRP installation has been extended until March 31. All vehicles which are still without HSRP would have to get them fixed by the deadline," Ahmedabad's RTO GS Parmar, said.
At the beginning of February, more than 1.20 crore out of 2.1 crore vehicles registered in the state was yet to get an HSRP. A senior transport department official said that around 10,000 vehicles were being fitted with the new plates on an average per day. Back-of-the-envelope calculations show that it would take more than three years to replace HSRP in all vehicles at this rate.
Deputy chief minister Nitin Patel said that the drive to replace old number plates with the high-security registration plants is going ahead at full steam and that the state government has approached Supreme Court with a request for more time.
Majority of the 1.2 crore vehicles without these plates are older ones as RTOs have been fitting HSRPs in vehicles registered after November 2012. RTO had earlier said that vehicles without HSRP after the deadline would have to pay fine of up to Rs500.
