Heavy rains to continue in parts of Gujarat

The weather department says an upper air cyclonic circulation over south Gujarat and adjoining areas is bringing the rainfall in the state

Monsoon has been vigorous over Saurashtra-Kutch, active over Gujarat region on Friday, according to a statement by Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). Heavy rains continued in south Gujarat; isolated parts in the region witnessed very heavy rains. Saurashtra region, which has received a scarce amount of rainfall so far also received rain.

The weather department said an upper air cyclonic circulation over south Gujarat and adjoining areas is bringing the rainfall in the state.

Forecast till next Thursday

South Gujarat and central Gujarat regions are expected to receive fairly widespread rains with very heavy rains in isolated places till next Thursday. North Gujarat region is also expected to receive rainfall in a phased manner. Roughly 60 per cent areas of Saurashtra are expected to receive rainfall in phases with cumulative total of 50 mm to 80 mm during the forecast period. Some isolated places might get more than 100 mm of cumulative rains, said the department.

Pockets which received more than 90mm of rainfall

As per the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) of the state government, 143 talukas of the state received rains during the day. The major ones include Kodinar (180 mm), Malia (175 mm), Sutrapada (170 mm), Bhavnagar (111 mm), Mendarda (105 mm), Jamkandorna (98 mm), Visavadar (96 mm). The state has so far received about 240 mm of rains, which is about 29 per cent of 30-year average.

62 roads were blocked for transportation

Torrential rains have been pouring in parts of city, since the last five days. Due to heavy rainfall, several roads were chocked with traffic jam. A press release issued by the state government stated that 62 roads were blocked for the transportation, including one state highway.
