If you have a campus that is large and green, then perhaps you should be part of this count. For, the Campus Bird Count (CBC) is all set to begin from February 16 to 19 in which campuses across Gujarat can register to count the birds in their campus.

Last year 29 campuses from Gujarat recorded 102 species of birds in the CBC. GMERS college recorded the highest number of bird species (47)from Gujarat in a campus in 2017. In all, 187 campuses from 23 states took part in the CBC count across the country recording 455 species. This year so far only three campuses have registered from Gujarat.

Kedar Champhekar, Programme Coordinator, Centre for Environment Education (CEE) said that campuses that are large and green are often home to several birds.

"CEE is one of the campuses that regularly takes part in the county. This is an effort to regularly monitor birds that make their home in educational and institutional campuses," said Champhekar. He said any organisation including schools, industries, or offices that have large campuses and is home to several birds can participate in the event. " Outside protected areas such as national parks and wildlife sanctuaries such habitats are becoming increasingly important for our wildlife," he said.

The CBC is part of the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) and is organised by Cornell University and the Audubon Society in the USA while in India it is coordinated by Bird Count India.

Bird Count India is a consortium of organisations and groups working together to increase collective knowledge about bird distributions and populations.

In 2017, Indian birdwatchers recorded 825 species as part of the GBBC. India was the third highest contributing country worldwide and discovered more species than any other. Information about the GBBC, Campus Bird Count can be found at www.birdcount.in.

The idea behind GBBC is to tap into the potential of huge network of birdwatchers spread across the country to gather as much data on birds in a short time as possible.
