Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) chief Amit Chavda sought an inquiry into the ongoing groundnut scam in the state by a sitting High Court judge. Chavda was addressing the media on Saturday.

"We want a judicial inquiry into the groundnut scam. This is an organized scam. Each groundnut warehouse is being run in a corrupt way. The ruling party is targeting the small fish while big ones are free," said Chavda.

"The ruling party is blaming the Congress for the scam and saying no BJP members are involved. Rather than playing a blame game, the chief minister should seek a judicial inquiry," added Chavda.

The Congress also announced to stage a protest and conduct rallies across the state on Monday.

"The top BJP leaders are saving themselves. Hence, they are not in favour of any probe. We are going to stage protest and rallies in districts across the state," Chavda said.

Paresh Dhanani, leader of opposition in state assembly also addressed the media in Gandhidham, Kutch. He said the government is only targetting the small fish. The big ones are roaming free.

"Poor quality groundnut was stocked in Jamjodhpur Mandali (73,454 sacks) and Moti Dhanej Mandali (31,685 sacks) in Jetpur's warehouse. As soon as the scam appeared, all members of Moti Dhanej Mandali sent to jail. Then why not a single member of Jamjodhpur," said Dhanani.

The scam is growing

The groundnut scam is growing every passing day. It is estimated around Rs 4,000 crore. Twenty people, including officials of the two companies that government had given the contract for procurement of groundnut from Saurashtra region, have been arrested.

The groundnut stock, at many places, was adulterated with sand and pebbles. Many people have also alleged that the pure stock was illegally sold to millers. Later, the warehouses where the cheap stockpile was stored caught fire.
