A city school has declared holidays for its pre-school children after a few were diagnosed with the hand-foot-and-mouth disease. Since this disease is airborne and affects only children below 8 years, as a precautionary step, Eklavya school has declared a 4-day holiday stop its spread.

The school authorities had initially declared two days holiday but then extended it to four days.

A parent requesting anonymity said, "The holiday has been declared till Friday but since Saturday is a Dushera holiday and Monday is Gandhi Jayanti, children will resume school on Tuesday."

In this disease, viral infection causes sores and rashes in the mouth, hands, and feet with fever. As this news spread, Udgam School for Children sent out circulars to their parents regarding communicable diseases. Manan Choksi, Executive Director, Udgam School for Children said, "We are looking at the rapid spread of various diseases in the city. As a result, we are asking parents to inform in case their child is suffering from any such disease."

The notice issued by the school said, "We need to ensure communicable diseases do not spread amongst children. There has been a little respite from swine flu. However, dengue menace is still on. Today the little-known disease 'Hand Foot and Mouth Disease' is spreading rapidly in Ahmedabad. In case you notice symptoms related to any such communicable diseases please do not send the child to school; inform the vice principal and if the possible mention in the leave note, so that we can take steps to curb its spread."

A parent of a class 6 student in Eklavya said, "This is a good step by the school."

Commenting on this, JG International School Principal Kavita Sharma said, "We have done a lot of sessions related to monsoon-related diseases including swine flu and various kinds of infections. Fortunately, there has been no such case as yet in our school. From past two weeks, we have been holding sessions on safety, good touch, bad touch, hygiene, etc."

Despite several calls to the Eklavya school authorities, no one responded.
