The war of words over the alleged groundnut scam continues. The Congress on Monday reiterated its demand for a probe in the scam by a sitting judge of High Court, while the state government accused the Opposition of raising baseless issues.

State Congress president Amit Chavda told reporters that the government should order a probe by a sitting judge of high court into the groundnut scam. Chavda said that the government had a track record of constituting probe panels headed by retired judges to get out of difficult situations.

Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel, however, said that the Congress’s claim of Rs400 crore scam in groundnut procurement in Banaskantha was not correct as the total procurement was much less.

“The police have caught the persons involved in the irregularities. Those who were a part of the sacks scam have also been caught. The probe in the case has been handed over to a retired HC judge so that the truth comes out,” Patel said, accusing the Congress of making baseless allegations in view of upcoming parliamentary elections.

Under tremendous pressure from the Opposition Congress, the state government on Saturday constituted a Commission, headed by justice (retired) HK Rathod, to probe cases of fire in four groundnut warehouses.
