A subway may soon connect the two campuses of the Gujarat University (GU) very soon. The varsity has floated a proposal to connect its sports complex to the Convention and Exhibition Centre (GUCEC). The proposal has reached the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, sources said.

If AMC passes the proposal GU will be the second institute to have a subway of its own, followed by Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA).

"We want the subway for two reasons: one, to ease mobility; secondly, to get NAAC accreditation. For accreditation, we need everything on one campus. I met former mayor Gautam Shah and several AMC officials in May to discuss the plan. We have to get the design part ready. The process will take some time. The university space is spread across 270 acres and we want to utilise every inch of it. In future, we also wish to have our own stadium along with other facilities," said Himanshu Pandya, Vice-Chancellor, Gujarat University.

As part of the expansion plan, the university will also increase its security by raising the height of its boundary walls. "The security is on the university's priority list. We are not only raising its walls but will also make different entry and exit gates," Pandya had said.

When dna tried to contact Narendra Modi, additional city engineer, he was unavailable for a comment.
