As the student senate election counting threatened to spiral out of control at Gujarat University, police swung into action. They lathicharged National Students Union of India (NSUI) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members to bring the situation under control.

As counting began on Tuesday morning amidst massive police presence, a scuffle ensued between NSUI and ABVP when three ballots — without any seal — arrived at the senate hall, venue for the counting.

Citing that as mischief, students demanded that counting be put on hold. And, the newly appointed vice chancellor, MN Patel, put it on hold. In the ensuing lathicharge, many student leaders sustained minor injuries. Members of 108 EMRI service said the injured were given first aid but no student was hospitalised. Police, on the other hand, said no one was detained or arrested even though dozens of student leaders were herded on to a police van from the campus.

Additional commissioner of police B division, JB Bhabhor, said no complaint had been made. “However, a complaint may be filed late at night,” he said.

“Since the situation is new for me, I will have to seek the opinion of legal experts on what should be done. If we did not put the counting on hold, violence could have broken out as the students were extremely agitated,” said the V-C. Regarding the lathicharge, he said no specific instructions had been given to the police and he was yet to check why the students were caned. GU student senate election for eight seats and 14 for student welfare was held on Sunday.  ACP, B division JB Bhabhor, koi ne detain karya. Lathi charge kari hadva to disperse people:  no coimplaint filed as of now, there is possibility.
