The Opposition Congress staged a walkout from the assembly on Thursday after its demand for forming an all-party MLAs’ committee to look into the jail tunnel case was rejected.

The demand was raised by Congress MLA Shailesh Parmar during a discussion on the incident in the Sabarmati Central Jail premises. The incident had come to light on February 10 and it emerged that three accused in Ahmedabad serial blasts case had dug up the 26-feet-long tunnel in a bid to escape from the prison.

Minister of state for home, Rajnikant Patel, told the House that a high-level inquiry committee of three senior police officials has been formed to probe the failed jailbreak. He also apprised the assembly about the various steps taken by the state government to strengthen security at the jail.

“The committee will conduct a thorough probe into the incident,” Patel told the House.

However, Parmar and, later, other Congress MLAs demanded that a committee comprising MLAs from all parties be constituted to look into the incident.

Leader of Opposition Shankarsinh Vaghela demanded that a team of MLAs representing all parties be formed to visit the Sabarmati jail and take stock of the incident. However, the demand was rejected by home minister Rajnikant Patel.

The Congress MLAs protested the decision and sought the Speaker’s intervention. However, Speaker Vaju Vala told the Opposition that the House couldn’t force any decision on the government. This led the agitated Congress MLAs to stage walkout from the House.

The minister later said that steps have been initiated to fill the large number of vacant posts of jail security personnel.
