In order to promote the Sanskrit language, the state government has decided to form the Sanskrit Bhasha Vikas Board. The decision was announced by state education minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama at an event held at the Gujarat University.

While the decision has been welcomed by academicians, some have criticised and questioned the intention behind such a move.

Confirming the same, Chudasama said: "To promote the language, which is so rich and recognised by countries world over, we have decided to form the Sanskrit Bhasha Vikas Board. Not only this, we will be celebrating a Sanskrit Utsav, which will begin from Raksha Bandhan and have various activities around the language. Through this board, we do not wish to make the language mandatory, but there are a lot of people who have interest in the language, but do not know where to obtain knowledge. It is a very holy language and a 'Sanskari' language. Sanskrit language has solutions to most of the bigger issues that we are facing today. It is also the mother of all languages."

The University, which had recently started a dedicated centre for spoken Sanskrit, open for all, claims that they are getting a good response. Talking about the same, Himanshu Pandya, Vice-Chancellor, Gujarat University, said: "We have nearly 100 people, who are learning Sanskrit at our Centre. Sanskrit dates back to centuries and traditions and we have forgotten about it now. It is a language accepted by the world community. Science has proved that people who speak in Sanskrit improve their brain senses as their nerves become active. We want to promote Sanskrit as a language across all caste, creed and region."

The office will be set up in six months.

When GU had set up centre for spoken Sanskrit, Ganesh Devy, Chairman, Peoples Linguistic Survey of India, said: "Sanskrit is a very important language in world history and I do not mind teaching it. It is an obsolete language. You may wonder, why revive a language which our ancestors decided to give up 1,000 years ago? Is it being revived to spread a certain value system, or is it being done for the sake of knowledge. I do not know. Also, why does no one promote tribal languages. It could help the children of the poor get a job."
